Design Visioning Process

Design Visioning Process (DVP) is a way of strategically considering a project's full life cycle throughout the design process (i.e., concept development, planning, design, construction, and commissioning). DVP optimizes project resources and professional expertise. DVP incorporates two commonly used methods of group problem solving and decision making: "Visioning" and "Partnering."

Visioning uses sketching to discuss, analyze, evaluate, and compare alternative design options. It accelerates the early phases of a project through a shared understanding of the project's essential intentions and components. Sketches or drawings provide long-term benefits to the project by serving as a foundational record for future decision-making. Together, visioning and partnering make sustainable solutions possible through unified, comprehensive communication. Design Visioning Process (DVP) builds a strong project vision, a unified organization of project expertise and a commitment to established goals, minimizing mistakes, avoiding delays, and providing improved control of expenses.

Conceptual Design

Developing the guiding principles for the project's "vision" is the most creative, and the most critical stage of the design process. It is a combination of the very pragmatic site inventory and analysis with the client/public's vision to inspire context-sensitive design solutions that may include elements of art, nature, and technology. These elements are then crafted to respond to the client's needs as well as stakeholder social, economic, environmental, and political interests.

At Stantec, conceptual design serves as the compass for all planning and design decisions. It points the way-preliminary design and final construction documents direct how to get there.

Our professionals utilize a variety of graphic tools to communicate the "vision" to our clients and stakeholders and to explain how it might be developed. These tools include hand-drawn sketches, three dimensional computer models, photographic simulations, and hand-crafted table-top models. Computer simulations often include fly-overs and walk-throughs, allowing the client and stakeholders to visualize what a project would look like from any point on a project site, from adjacent properties, or as the user would see it at eye-level. Through conceptual design, we are able to help our client, public officials, major stakeholders, user groups, and the community-at-large determine the most desirable solutions for their parks, open spaces, and recreational facilities.

Land Development

Stantec provides clients with sound planning, thoroughly executed engineering, specialized services, and proven project management that delivers projects on time and on budget. Master Planned Community

Stantec provides comprehensive design and planning services to clients worldwide. We create high-quality and sustainable community developments that are functional, innovative, attractive, and reflect the lifestyle of residents. This is exemplified through an internationally-recognized portfolio that includes master planning and design development of new towns, residential communities, mixed-use developments, and world-class destination resorts including golf courses, equestrian centers, and winter sports facilities, lake communities, and retirement communities

We understand that innovation, collaboration, and a strong vision are necessary to create successful communities. Our goal in each project is to provide social, environmental, and economic benefits in keeping with the physical site conditions, public expectations, and market realities of the project. Applying experience and leading technologies, our professionals transform land into viable projects and vital communities.

Parks and Open Space

Our approach to the development of parks and open space systems is comprehensive and integrated, allowing communities to achieve their recreational goals while balancing high performance design, environmental stewardship and fiscal realities. Responding to the client's development parameters and the site's characteristics, Stantec designs parks and open spaces to flexibly accommodate a range of activities from team sports and group gatherings, to quiet enjoyment or for children at play. Through professional and technical experience, we turn ideas into reality, inspiring solutions that enable our clients to optimize existing sites and develop new parks and open space systems that integrate seamlessly into the community fabric. The results are spaces that stimulate the imagination, creating a vibrant and enriching experience for park users.

Active and Passive Play Areas

Through an intuitive understanding of the dynamics of play and recreation, Stantec facilitates the development of facilities that foster a variety of forms of play. Stantec works closely with private and public clients in the planning, design, and implementation of innovative, functional, and safe play facilities for all ages.

Play spaces are designed for "barrier-free" access, social interaction, all-season play, and to withstand the elements and wear from ongoing usage. Stantec's extensive market and product knowledge support the client in making informed decisions surrounding the latest trends in the selection of active play apparatus and design of water features. Other amenities including restrooms, single and group picnic facilities, fencing, and site furnishings are designed to respond to functional and aesthetic considerations and support established visual themes.

Trails and Pedestrian Networks

Functional and accessible parks and circulation networks are not only desirable features of a community; they also help shape its vitality. They can help attract and retain residents, enhancing the quality of life, and creating economic sustainability. At Stantec, we believe successful trail and pathway networks require a deep understanding of the land, a strong vision, and a dedicated and experienced team of professionals. Working closely with our client and stakeholders, we create pathways that function in harmony with the natural landscape.
Trails can be used to preserve, define, or link open space, provide a natural respite in urban areas, protect the environment, and preserve cultural resources. Our experience includes multimodal systems. Our approach to design allows users to access, explore, and enjoy these special areas while offering protection for natural and scenic resources.
